About the Children’s Board
As you may have read, I recently stood before the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County (CBHC) with Sam Piazza to share the news about my latest documentary, Because of Sam, that chronicles Sam’s inspirational journey as a young man with Down syndrome who won Homecoming King and works at PDQ.
It was an exciting, yet emotional presentation for me, for many reasons.
The history of this special taxing district has deep roots, and a long list of kind trailblazing, grassroots child advocates throughout it who believed in our children and the power of quality early intervention services.
The late Colleen Lunsford Bevis is THE Mother of the CBHC – this is a picture with her here at the CBHC’s 20th Anniversary event in 2008:
She was a top volunteer leader (PTA Mom in sneakers, as she would say) and former CBHC Board Chair who helped get the CBHC established in this blessed County of Hillsborough (Tampa, Florida) – and she was also my friend and role model.
As a former CBHC employee, I knew she was right there with Sam and me as we shared his story (in a Board Room that is named after her).
The CBHC is one of the wonderful resources that helped Sam become a successful adult who contributes to society, AND, who, like Ms. Bevis, advocates for those who need a champion.
The CBHC is graciously underwriting a FREE Community Screening of Because of Sam on Oct. 19th at 3 pm. (Register here in order to attend)
If you don’t know CBHC’s history, please take a moment and watch the documentary I produced in 2008 about its founding.
Ms. Bevis is featured in it as the key storyteller, as well as many other amazing humans:
